Lymphatic Drainage

Your lymphatic system helps eliminate bodily waste. A healthy, active lymphatic system uses the natural movements of the body do so.  However, surgery or other damage often causes excess fluid to accumulate, aka edema.  Lymphatic drainage can help to unclog lymph nodes and stimulate drainage of inflammation through the lymph system back into circulation.

What is Lymphatic Massage?

Lymphatic drainage therapy, is a technique developed in Germany specifically for treatment of lymphedema.  Lymphedema typically develops after lymph nodes are removed during surgery.  This most often occurs following mastectomy for breast cancer.  Lymphedema can also be present at birth, develop at puberty, or become pronounced during adulthood.

Up to 25 percent of breast cancer patients whose surgery includes removal of lymph nodes eventually develop lymphedema. The condition also occurs in the legs or other parts of the body if lymph nodes are removed.

When performing a lymphatic massage, you must address more than just the affected area. Like tributaries flowing into a river, lymph vessels flow into collection points.  Therefore, a lymphatic massage is less specific and includes all areas with related drainage.

Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage

The main task of the lymphatic system is to keep the immune system operating well.  It also helps to clean and nourish all the cells in the body, no matter what their function. A poorly functioning lymphatic system affects every part of the body.

Lymphatic massage can help to reduce inflammation and push edema back into circulation.  Depending on the area of the body involved, kinesiotape may help to minimize the accumulation of inflammation and help to extend the effects achieved by a lymphatic drainage massage therapist.  Ask us about other lifestyle and dietary modifications that may help to reduce inflammation.

The History of Lymphatic Drainage

Have you ever experienced that sluggish, puffy feeling after a long flight or a day on your feet? It could be a sign of sluggish lymph flow, and a lymphatic drainage massage might be just what you need! But this gentle massage technique has a fascinating history that goes beyond trendy spa treatments.

From Riviera Observations to Revolutionary Technique:

The story begins in the 1930s on the sunny French Riviera. A married couple, Emil and Estrid Vodder, were working as naturopaths and massage therapists. They noticed that many of their patients suffering from chronic sinus infections and other immune disorders also had swollen lymph nodes. Intrigued, they started experimenting with light, rhythmic hand movements on the lymph nodes, inspired by the natural flow of the lymphatic fluid.

Their observations proved fruitful. The gentle pressure helped move the stagnant lymph, reducing swelling and improving immune function. In 1936, they formally introduced their technique, “Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD),” in Paris. Despite initial skepticism from the medical community, MLD’s success with lymphedema and other lymphatic disorders earned it recognition.

Spreading the Knowledge:

The Vodders dedicated their lives to teaching and refining their technique. They established the Dr. Vodder School in Denmark and tirelessly trained therapists worldwide. Their legacy lives on in the countless practitioners who offer MLD today, using it to address a variety of conditions like:

  • Lymphedema (swelling caused by lymphatic system impairment)
  • Post-surgical swelling
  • Chronic pain
  • Skin conditions
  • Fatigue and stress

Beyond the Massage Table:

The Vodders’ pioneering work not only established MLD as a valuable therapeutic tool but also shed light on the crucial role of the lymphatic system in overall health. Understanding the importance of lymph drainage has led to advancements in surgical techniques, cancer treatment, and even skincare.

So, next time you’re feeling congested or simply want to give your body a boost, consider a lymphatic drainage massage. It’s a testament to the power of observation, dedication, and a gentle touch, all thanks to a couple who found inspiration on a sunny Riviera beach.
